Hmmmmmm.....
This seems to be the question of the year. I have heard some rumors about a raise in pay for wait staff. Since so many of us make FAR LESS than minimum wage, (I personally make $2.63 per hour from my restaurant.) I can only imagine what this legislative act would do to my company's payroll. The company I work for has over 100 stores with probably 30+/- wait staff employed at each. Can you imagine how much more they would have to pay every hour? It makes me giggle every time I think about it!!
It still seems wrong to me that the company I work for expects me to complete sidework and daily cleaning, yet they don't actually pay me for any of it. They simply provide me with the opportunity to make money. Like I'm a private contractor or something....
So the question is, should we be fighting for more money? As much as I would love to receive more than $.26 in my weekly paycheck, how would that increase affect my tips? If people knew that the wait staff recently started making minimum wage, would they leave less in tips? Do they even know how much I really make now?

I'm not sure about this. I make 2.36 an hour in my state. I happen to be in a very touristy area where peoples ideals of tippage is diverse. Hrmmm. Personally, I don't want to rant on your blog so I will let this one go. For now!

It's really a struggle to determine the way to go with wages for servers. On the one hand, when you have to spend an hour or so doing side or opening work, it sucks getting $2 an hour. On the other hand when you make killer tips, it's hard to agitate for a higher wage...but not everybody is lucky enough to work at a place that tips are through the roof. For example, during a 4 hour busy shift, I'll come close to $100, but if I was working at the local greasy spoon, I'd be working harder and making much less...
I think you should get a raise. The cost of EVERYTHING, especially the basics like heating and gas prices, is going up except for the commom people's wages. A certain amount of tip income is never guaranteed anywhere.

This has been a source of debate for many, many years. If you've travelled to Europe, where the majority of servers get a set wage, eating out is more expensive compared to here in the US. Profit margins in restaurants are pretty low, so increasing server wages would mean higher costs. Which means higher menu prices. Which might mean less eating out.
Who knows? All I know is that my best servers never complained about their piddly hourly wage. It went basically to pay their taxes. I could always tell who were the crappy servers. They would complain about their $30 paycheck. I would inform them that if they were getting good tips, and claiming all their tips, their check would be $0.00. And then I'd pay more attention to their serving skills.
Honestly, I didn't know. the minimum wage in my state is $8.25. I personally believed that wait staff make minimum wage and i still tip. it really bothers me that wait staff are screwed over in that way, even if they have the chance to make more. It's wrong.
Well in Canada the servers minimum wage is only a couple dollars less then regular minimum wage (which depending on your province is about $9-10). So servers and bartenders make like $7 an hour or else the company is super nice and they make regular minimum wage. Although I have heard of a couple of companies where although they aren't unionized work a lot like a union in the sense where if you work there for a long ass time you can make like $15-20 an hour serving. But still that's a rare occurrence and it's still pretty difficult to survive on $8 an hour even if tips are good that night.
