Discover Card Strikes Again!!

The couple was nice enough.
The service was exceptional.
They were one of my first tables, so I wasn't busy yet and I was still in a good mood.
The food came out fast and cooked perfectly.
There was nothing wrong with dinner....

$45 bill - $6.50 tip.

Discover Card is an ongoing drama. More Tales Of Discover Card...

To paraphrase the Family Guy: (in an episode when Peter and Lois opened a restaurant)

Peter: "Good evening, welcome to Big Pete's House of Munch, how can I help you?"

Customer: "Yes, do you accept the Discover card?"

Peter (behind podium): "Ha! Hey Lois, 'Diamond Jim Brady' over here just asked if we accept Discover card!"

Lois (from kitchen): "OOOOH, they're in an exclusive club called 'anybody!'"

Peter: "Yeah! No, no no, I don't think so. You know, I would rather take two live chickens than your fly-by-night credit card. I would rather take a jar of pennies that's value is less than the amount of your bill."

Customer: "Well you don't have to insult me!"

Peter: "No, no no, you're gonna stand there and listen to all the funny things I would take instead of your credit card."

Oh yes! I have noticed this too. I think it's the allure of cash back - it attracts the cheap-os - those who just can't afford to tip (heh)...

PS. I linked to you!

PS -- Tony - NO ONE takes Discover. I am surprised we do. You might as well carry around Euros and Yen - you have a better chance of someone in America accepting it as payment than Discover.

I'm not even sure what this blog is complaining about! HA! Are you complaining that discover card users are cheap? I don't have one, but I used to. I also used to be a waitress. I actually would be pretty stoked to get $6.50 on a table. Damn, some people make that much per hour!

6.50 on a $45 bill is just about 15% isnt leaving a 15% rule of thumb? id prob do ten a $45 bill though... i like to tip in multiples of 5s, haha.

Yeah I am a little confused... What is wrong with discover and why are you upset with a 15% tip that is the norm is it not?

I usually tip 20% for amazing service and 10% for poor service.

Yes, really--that's about 15%. I think I usually tip about 17 to 20, but isn't 15 percent standard? Another dollar would have been 16.6 percent. Is that reasonable? Is $1.00 that big a deal to hold bad feelings about someone?

Sad thing is all you food service people don't even know how or why tipping got started. A tip wasn't to say thanks for good service it was to say , hey here is a little bribe(tip) so hook me up next time I come in. And that's how tipping got started. So when when people travel outside of their normal area they aren't supposed to tip because they won't be back next time. And if you don't like how people don't tip you enough work harder and if you still don't like it get a new job. You'd be suprised how many people have no personality and no smile and yet expect a good tip. If I was a total a$$ I would tip at all unless you did exceptional service. And before you get all nasty I do tip upwards to 30 percent and sometimes higher if service is very exceptional.

Tips seem to have become an expectation with the excuse being that the wait staff aren't well compensated by the business. By that logic any minimum wage job should require tips to paid by recipients of the service enabled by the job.... I wonder how many folks that are wait staff have stopped by a person moving the grass on a public/govrenment property to give them a tip? Or for that matter how many people have tipped people collecting toll at a toll booth or the greeter at your grocery store?
