Trash Picking???

There is a continuous silverware shortage at my restaurant.
This is a serious and very frustrating issue for the entire staff.

Well, to make a frustrating situation even worse, we have opened several cases of forks and knives. SO WHERE HAS IT GONE?

Obviously, the wait staff is throwing it out. That is the only possible solution.
So, how do we resolve this issue? Well, we try the magnetic thing that goes over the top of the can to catch the silverware. It didn't work. We STILL ran out of silverware.

Obviously, the wait staff MUST be intentionally shoving it deep into the barrel, just to mess with us...
So, how do we resolve this issue? Place a pan over the top of the barrel for all servers to dump their trash into. Then make the dishwashers pick through it to get all the silverware that the waitstaff insists on throwing out...

I wish I were kidding.
Am I the only one who has an issue with this?
Is there a better solution for "Silverware Retention"?

Our restaurant does this too with the giant pan over the trash can. It's disgusting!

No way!! I was so appalled that we started doing this! I have never heard of it before and I thought it was just something we were doing.

Oh - and just to update - we are OUT of silverware again!! and neither the dishwashers or the servers are throwing it out this time...

I say "stitch to plastic".

We have a magnetic ring that fits around the top of the trash can, when silverware is thrown away, it sticks to the magnet. Works pretty good.

if its not being caught by the magnets you have one or two types of thieves --> guests or workers

tho the workers might just be tossing it out when they leave from work

It's definitely been a while since this post, but I just ran across it...

If it is in fact the staff, and it probably is, because we had this problem at the restaurant that I work at. The manager said that he was going to dump the trash out and if he found silverware in the trash that the servers would have to clean up the mess, and if he didn't that he would take care of it. This happened once, he found silverware, the servers had to clean it up, and we haven't had a problem since.

There must be a better way. I have spent thousands of dollars on silverware replacement this year. Who has a fluglebinder idea for this problem? If you do you could be a millionare.

The way we do it at my restaurant is before the trash is thrown out we wave one of those metal detector wands up and over and all around the trash bag (which is clear). If there's on in there the dishwasher has to get it out. If it's in the linen bag that is also next to the Hobart dishwasher, then the server grabs it out of the linen bag. It's a bit gross, but it does work.

the way to keep your silverware from being thrown out? make the servers or whoever is bussing the table and just throwing the cutlery in the garbage pick it out themselves. Let the dishwashers watch as they get elbow up in garbage at the end of the night. That's what they do at my work and silverware in the garbage is a rare occurrence.

Also if you have silverware made of ACTUAL silver then it's probably getting stolen by either/or customers or staff.
